Save Money On Gas – Stop Bad Habits!
There isn’t a great deal we can do about the price of a barrel of oil, but there is a lot we as motorists can do to save money on gas whenever we fill up at the gas pump.
Save Money On Gas by Modifying Your Driving Habits
Whilst most of us would most likely agree that our driving habits are a major contributor to poor fuel economy, it can take quite a lot of concious effort to modify these bad habits. Aggressive driving, being in a hurry to get to one’s destination, accelerating and braking heavily are just some of the habit’s we can easily change once we have a very good reason to do so.
One of the biggest incentives to breaking those bad habits is being able to save some of that money we spend on gas, and over a period time spend those savings on new clothes, plasma television, saving for a vacation or taking your loved one out for dinner for example.
Buy Your Gas When Running Errands
Planning your trip makes your driving more efficient and you spend less time driving aimlessly from location to location. Try to combine as many purposes into one trip as you can.
Buy your gas in the morning or evening. Gasoline becomes denser in colder temperatures. Gas pumps are set to measure the volume of the fuel that you pump and not the density.
This means that if you fill up your gas tank in the cooler morning temperatures, or in the colder evening hours, that you’ll be getting better gas price economy. Try to fill up your gas tank later in the evening to avoid the rush of day hours.
Maintenance Tips
Make sure that your tires are properly inflated. Under inflated tires will increase the amount of gas your car will use. Check your tires at least once a month. It’s important to check your tires when they are cold, to make sure your tires have the correct pressure.
Replace your vehicles air filter on a regular basis. Your car’s air filter keeps dust in the air from damaging you cars internal engine components. Dirty air filters can increase your cars fuel consumption by up to 10% and depending on the type of road conditions you are driving on, could need to be changed at least once per month.
I would say the best habit you could or have or at least improve is to have your car properly tuned and maintained on a regular basis following your car manufacturers specifications, this will not only save you money on gas, it will also increase your cars fuel efficiency by up to 30%.
